Water cistern

Before water was piped in by the Navy, the Keys depended on rain water saved in cisterns for their water needs. During the 1800s a great fire swept through the area. Residents watched from boats as fire hopped from roof to roof destroying their homes. Since then, only metal roofs, which had survived the fire, were allowed on homes. This also helped with gathering rain water in gutters into cisterns.
