Brief stop for a rest and questions
|
Mammoth Cave is a dry cave. Being dry allowed it to grow to over 500 miles long. Dry caves look very different from wet caves. There are very few stalagtites and stalagmites. This cave is still growing too. A thick sandstone cap is what keeps it dry. If you have allergies, you won't notice them in here. For a few months quite some time ago, a doctor had huts built of stone in the caverns and used them for patients with tuberculosis (consumption). Unfortunately, it did not help and was abandoned.
