Sand Cave16 viewsFamous cave explorer Floyd Collins died inside here February 13, 1925 and is buried nearby. While exploring alone, he knocked a rock loose that pinned him in a tight passage. While he was found by friends and family the next day alive, there was a cave-in a few days later that cutoff rescuers from him. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floyd_Collins for more of the story. I have actually seen the movie inspired by this, Ace in the Hole, with Kirk Douglas.Jul 12, 2009

Red Hot Mama15 viewsI needed to drop a travel bug off that I had picked up at Lost River Cave since I am going in the wrong direction for it's mission. I found the Almost Out of Bounds geocache near Mammoth Cave National Park with this travel bug in it. It wants to rack up some miles so is going along with me for the ride to Missouri.Jul 12, 2009

Brief stop for a rest and questions15 viewsMammoth Cave is a dry cave. Being dry allowed it to grow to over 500 miles long. Dry caves look very different from wet caves. There are very few stalagtites and stalagmites. This cave is still growing too. A thick sandstone cap is what keeps it dry. If you have allergies, you won't notice them in here. For a few months quite some time ago, a doctor had huts built of stone in the caverns and used them for patients with tuberculosis (consumption). Unfortunately, it did not help and was abandoned.
