Some Windows are actually installed directly under porch roofs so that they provide air for rooms but are completely hidden and sheltered by the roof. Many houses have this ornate fencing which was bought cheap at auctions of goods from shipwrecks. Wrecking (salvaging) was big business in Key West until lighthouses and other safety measures made shipping safer.

They finally moved it off to safety at a cost of billions of dollars. You can easily see the lighthouse from the old spot. Building a new one may have been cheaper but this is an icon of the past.
