George Washington slept here!71 viewsThe only officer tents to survive are those of George Washington which have been well cared for and handed down through family. These ended up with the wife of General Robert E. Lee, a descendant of Martha's. Martha was a widow with children when George married her. He never adopted her kids though he loved them. During the Civil War, the tents were taken to the US Patent Office for protection and eventually given back to the Lees. George had this setup even when he had a room in a house as a sanctuary.May 12, 2008
